“A dusty, Rhode Island, red rooster who had wandered too far from his own farm yard crossed the road, and Eddie hit him without running too far off the road.” — Steinbeck, John. Cannery Row.

One of the things I feel strongly about using a view camera, is that it brings you the original voice of the medium. It’s the way it began, with wet plates, and glass plates, large awkward cameras. It made a photographer really consider everything that he photographed. It was no casual, instantaneous reaction. When you saw something it had to mean a lot to you.

One of the things that I learned on the street was to trust life and to keep hands off of it. That same feeling continues in the rest of the work I do, landscape or portraits or any interests that I have. Things are good enough as they are, there’s no reason to tamper with them.

“A photograph that attempts to show simply how wonderful nature is poses very few intellectual challenges.” — Paul Hill

“The more you become involved in photography the more you realise that the photographic print is an event and experience in itself, not just a record of what was happening in front of the camera. The photograph should not be expected to mirror truth. Because ‘truth’ in visual terms is always subjective.” — PH
